Fawlty Towers threat to UK tourism?

Basil FawltyChristopher Rodrigues, chairman of VisitBritain, has suggested that jobs are on the line in the UK tourism sector due not only to the recession but also to poor service. He has indicated that the likes of Basil Fawlty are “still patrolling some hotel check-in desks”. Do you agree with his comments?  Have you any experiences you wish to share?  And do you think it’s responsible for Mr Rodrigues to speak out like this?  There are, afterall, many very good hotels out there that might suffer from these kinds of remarks…

To be honest, probably the reason for most of the people behind the desks looking like that is they simply get paid peanuts. Then again, came across one in Orkney who was a bit like that, although the staff were really friendly.

If you want real sultary moods, try a chain of hotels originally from France who’s name begins with “N”. They do it like no one else….possibly because all the staff seem to be French.

As for him – he’s probably just cheesed off about a bad hotel stay.
