The parent company of Waldorf Astoria hotels, Hilton, have bought London’s opulent Bently Hotel in Kensington and relaunched it under the Waldorf brand.  Simon Vincent of Hilton said “The Bentley London is synonymous with style and class, offering it’s guests a truly world class hospitality experience.  This, now coupled with The Waldorf Astoria Collection Brand, provides a powerful combination, as we look to add to the existing 171 hotels within the Hilton family across Europe.”  The hotel features an array of luxurious amenities which include a wonderful Spa with a Turkish Hamam.

Segedunum Roman Fort

The Segedunum Roman Fort is an excellent day out for the whole family.  It is located at the Eastern end of Hadrian’s Wall near Newcastle Upon Tyne.  It is one of the best preserved Roman strongholds in the country and offers wonderful working hot baths.  You can stand at the top of a 35m high viewing tower and enjoy stunning views of the whole fort.  You can really visualise what daily life there was like for a Roman Soldier, from where they slept to where they ate and relaxed.  Tickets are priced at a credit crunching £3.95 and under 17’s can enter for free.

Today’s picture of the day is of the Angel of the North in Gateshead, Tyne & Wear. Witnessed by thousands of travellers going up and down the A1 every day, this landmark sculpture has been adopted as a symbol for the north-east.   It’s as if it were greeting visitors to Tyneside since it can also be seen from the London-Edinburgh East Coast mainline.

£220 million to be spent on Blackpool

Plans for a £220 million facelift for Blackpool have been unveiled.  The plans include new offices, a supermarket, hotels, shops, cafes and restaurants.  The new development will be positioned on a 10 hectare site near Blackpool North Station and Talbot Road.  Work will begin in 2011 and bring with it hundreds of construction jobs and a much needed boost economy.  The taxpayers will be paying around £40 million to the plans and £220 million will come from private investment.  The chairman of ReBlackpool which is the local regeneration body commented “This project will transform a neglected and under utilised area of the town into a welcoming family-friendly getaway, encouraging more people to visit, providing better services for local people and encouraging inward investment.”

Picture of the day: Kilchurn Castle

Today’s picture of the day is of Kilchurn Castle near Dalmally in Argyll. This interesting castle lies at the north-east end of Loch Awe and was built by Sir Colin Campbell of Glenorchy in about 1550. Although now in ruins, you can still get a feel for some of the internal parts of the castle.
