Newcastle City Library is scheduled to re-open on June 7th 2009, and to celebrate this event, the city is hosting several reading-related celebrations throughout the month.
From the 4th – 7th June 2009, Northumberland Street will be home to a giant bookcase populated with some famous characters from popular literature, including Captain Hook, Sherlock Holmes, and Alice in Wonderland.
Over the weekend of June 20th, visitors to the new library will be treated like VIPs, with the chance to take a red-carpet walk, get the paparazzi treatment, and enjoy a behind the scenes tour of the library.
The new City Library building has been named the ‘Charles Avison Building’, after the 18th century composer, Charles Avison, who was born in Newcastle. Some of Avison’s music will be played at the library’s dedication ceremony.
