The Wedgwood Museum in Stoke-on-Trent has won the £100,000 Art Fund Prize 2009 – the UK’s largest single arts prize. It was announced last night (18th June 2009) at the Royal Institute of British Architects in London.
The Art Fund Prize honours the most imaginative and original museum or gallery of the year and is a huge accolade for the museum, which only opened last October after the charitable Wedgwood Museum Trust spent nearly a decade raising funds to build it.
The museum is home to a vast collection of Wedgwood editions, as well as an extensive archive of social history documents, from copies of birth certificates to details of employees who have worked for the Wedgwood company over the last 250 years. It is open daily from 10.00am to 5.00pm (from 9.00am on weekdays). Admission is £6.00 for adults, £5.00 for concessions or £4.50 for children (under fives go free).

We’ve been busy working behind the scenes on UKseries this past few months, tweaking the sites in a such a way that they now used tabbed browsing. The upshot of this is that when you now look at an individual entry (eg. a hotel, holiday cottage, tourist attraction or whatever) on any of the UKseries sites, you can find the information you need much more readily. Before, these pages used to be quite long, with links to all manner of information (maps, weather, etc.). It’s all potentially very useful but wasn’t as easy to access as it could be. Now, with the new tabbed approach, very little scrolling is required and you can find the information you need much more readily.
Try it out with this example entry for the famous Wild Boar Hotel just up the road from us here in the Lake District. The link takes you to the main page for that entry, with tabs to ‘more info’, ‘in the area’, a ‘booking’ page and ‘extras’. Within each section, there is information that’s easily accessible without the need for the scroll bar, such as additional pictures of the hotel, guest reviews, nearby tourist attractions and more.
We hope you like the new look. We think it makes the site more user friendly which in turn should have a positive impact on bookings and bringing our visitors back.
If you have any comments or feedback you’d like to share – good or bad – please don’t be shy… post a comment!

Tomorrow Historic Royal Palaces will mark the 500th anniversary of King Henry VIII’s coronation (24th June 1509) with a magnificent Tudor river pageant rowing from the Tower of London up the River Thames to the King’s favourite surviving royal residence, Hampton Court Palace. This event is being held in association with Thames Alive.
