Did you know that the highest town in England is Buxton, Derbyshire, at 1,000 feet (307 metres) above sea level? Alston, at a similar elevation in Cumbria, also lays a claim to the title but that has sometimes had its town status questioned because of its absence of a regular market. Often described as the gateway to the Peak District, Buxton has a long history as a spa town.
