Picture of the day: Box Hill, Surrey

Today’s picture of the day is of Box hill in Tadworth, Surrey.  It is a beautiful area of woodland and chalk downland.  It is a popular destination for tourists from London and is the ideal place to visit for ramblers and Naturalists.  There are many stunning walks and wonderful views to the South Downs.  At the top you will find a shop, information centre and an 1890’s fort that is open to the public.

Join English Heritage’s Tudor court falconers on the 18th and 19th July 2009 as they prepare the royal hunting birds for work, at the 1066 Battle of Hastings, Abbey and Battlefield, East Sussex. Learn about their duties in the field and the techniques they use to provide sport for their master while finding out about the curious but vital job of the owl. Marvel at the graceful falcons and their stunning aerial displays, as well as the powerful hawk which catches food for the falconer’s larder. Picture of the day: Loch Laggan, Inverness

Today’s picture of the day is of Loch Logan located in Glen Spean, inbetween Kingussie and Fort William.  It is a dammed Highland loch and boasts the largest fresh water beach in the country.  It is famed for being a film location for the popular TV series Monarch of the Glen and Queen Victoria spent her first Highland holiday here in 1847 but did not stay long due to the midges!

Picture of the day: Dovestone Reservoir, Manchester

Today’s picture of the day is of Dovestone Reservoir in Manchester.  It provides a great place to visit for the whole family with a 2.5 mile pushchair and wheelchair friendly path around the area.  It is situated in the beautiful Peak District National Park, surrounded by fascinating wildlife.  There is a sailing club on site and plenty of excellent cycling available.  In 1999 A ‘Life for a Life’ Memorial Forest was established and adds to the beauty of the surrounding area.

Today’s picture of the day is of New Forest Otter and Owl Centre in Southampton.  It is home to a large collection of native wildlife and includes otters from all over the world, deer, ferrets, mice, lynx and Scottish wild cats.  Visitors can enjoy talks from keepers and watch them feed.  You can also see foxes and badgers sleeping in the barn.  There is a gift shop and cafe on site.

Picture of the day: Maelmin Heritage Trail, Northumberland

Today’s picture of the day is of Maelmin Heritgae Trail and is near to the picturesque village of Milfield in Northumberland.  It features The Dark Age hut which is replica of a farmer’s dwelling as it would have been in 500AD.  There is also the Mesolithic hut which mimicks a 10,000 year old dwelling and was specially built for the popular TV programme, meet the Ancestors.

Antony Gormley’s ‘living statues’ art project

Antony Gormley’s ‘living statues’ art project – known as One & Other - got underway today.  It’s a moment where members of the public get their opportunity to occupy an empty plinth in Trafalgar Square for one hour, 24 hours a day, for 100 days.  You can visit the website at any time to view a streaming video of whoever is currently taking centre stage.

The opening of the event was slightly marred by an impromptu occupation of the plinth by an anti-smoking protestor as the following video shows but the project has been continuing successfully since.

Picture of the day: Glamis Castle, Scotland

Today’s picture of the day is of Glamis Castle.  It has been home to the Earls of Strathmore and a royal residence since 1372.  Famed for being the setting of Shakespeare’s Macbeth the Castle was also the home of HRH Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Mother.  It is today open to visitors and is open daily from March to October.

Chimps on the loose at Chester Zoo!

Visitors to Chester Zoo got a surprise they hadn’t bargained for today and were asked to evacuate the attraction because around 30 chimpanzees had escaped their enclosure. They were asked to leave the 110-acre site as a precautionary measure and to allow zookeepers to gather them back in which they achieved by 4pm.  A statement on the zoo’s website reads:

“In the interests of public safety Chester Zoo was evacuated today, Sunday 5th July as a precautionary measure. This decision was taken due to an escape of chimpanzees from Chimp Island into a keeper area, which was not accessible to the public. Chester Zoo apologises for the inconvenience and disappointment caused to our many guests and will provide a refund or free future visit to our guests. Please ring 01244 380482 or 01244 380387 after 9am on Monday 6th to apply for a refund/free future visit. Further details will be put on this website on Monday 6th July.”
