The recent release of convicted Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi has received a very mixed response. Libyans were seen celebrating his return whilst many other people around the world – particularly in the United States – were understandably outraged. With talks of some people threatening to boycott anything to do with Scotland, it will be interesting to see if this unfortunate series of events has any significant impact as the US is responsible for 21% of Scotland’s overseas tourism. We asked our Twitter followers “Does the recent Lockerbie bomber release put you off visiting Scotland?” and here’s a handful of the responses that came back:
Why make ordinary Scots suffer because their politicians are idiots. (@jameswilman)
If anything, it makes me MORE likely to visit. Glad Scotland didn’t cave in to the revenge crowd baying for blood. (@FoolEnglish)
Why should it put me or anyone off travelling to Scotland? Their tourist industry didn’t make this ridiculous decision! (@paulajmartin)
yes am disgusted. 200+ people died he got heros welcome. Government should be ashamed he should of left to die in solitary alone. (@media73_TV)
no, we need to stop worrying about what USA thinks. We’re not a wee, silly country. We’re a hotbed of intelligence and creativity. (@cullenskinky)
Some of us have no choice, we live here! (@jennielees)
No, the weather puts me off visiting Scotland! Blaming an entire nation for a political decision is ludicrous imho. (@essexgourmet)
I’m visiting Scotland due to its landscape, people and spirit (double meaning intended), not due to its governments decisons (@whiskyfan)
So, again a mixed response, but one that perhaps suggests it’ll be ‘business as usual’ for tourism in Scotland.
