A host of fun activities from dragon hunting to making and testing a model sailing boat will be available for children and adults alike during the October half-term week at Coalport China Museum, Enginuity and the Jackfield Tile Museum, all located in the stunning Ironbridge Gorge near Telford in Shropshire.
Dragon Themed Activities
From Saturday 24th October to Sunday 1st November 2009, visitors to Coalport China Museum can join in a range of dragon-themed events inspired by the Broseley Dragon, one of the oldest Coalport China designs. A dragon hunt following clues around the museum and puppet theatre will be available all week, while the various storytelling sessions and workshops will vary day-to-day.
Between Monday 26th and Wednesday 28th October 2009, families will be able to help artist Tamzin Jones create a weaved willow sculpture of the Broseley Dragon after which the ‘creature’ will be on view nesting in the Smugglers Kiln until 1st November 2009.
Also on Monday Fran O’Boyle, under the guise of Victorian Dragon Hunter, Julius Drake, will tell thrilling stories of the brave hunter’s endeavours to capture the mysterious creatures. More exciting storytelling workshops follow on Wednesday when children can use their imagination to create their own dragon hunting tales.
Throughout half-term week, the puppet theatre in the Children’s Gallery will give youngsters a great opportunity to devise and act out their own dragon stories. There will also be a variety of drop-in creative workshops where activities might include painting a dragon fridge magnet, paper plate or bone china flower or clay modelling. Paper activities are free but there will be a £1 charge per item for the flowers and magnets. Clay sculpting is £2 for a ball of clay (excluding firing); £1 to create a ‘gold coin’ or free if it’s a gift to leave for the dragon. All costs are plus admission.
Make a Sailing Boat in the Float-a-Boat challenge
Across at Enginuity, the design and technology centre, a Float-a-Boat Challenge will take place between Saturday 24th October and Sunday 1st November 2009. Families will be able to design and make a sailing boat and then have the opportunity to test it out on a large pool with a gentle breeze provided by a high-tech wind machine. Boat making will take place each day between 11am and 4pm, with a break for lunch, and will be charged at £1.50 per boat plus admission.
Create a Spooky Ceramic Tile Design
A spooky Halloween theme at Jackfield Tile Museum between 26th and 30th October 2009 will see a host of scary designs being created using the tube lining technique at drop-in tile decorating workshops. The 6 x 6 inch tiles featuring visitors’ own designs and choice of colours cost £7 each plus admission. Tiles can be sent home at a later date for a small extra charge to cover postage and packing.
