Paris, Barcelona and London may have its great restaurants but among their exalted company is the humble Jumble Room in Grasmere, according to The Sunday Times. The restaurant – so-called for its mish mash mix of decorations and furnishings (including LP covers & newspaper prints in the loos) – was named No 1 in its list of 20 Great Little Restaurants in Europe. “The heartiest, happiest restaurant in the Lakes,” declared The ST: “Where the food is as eclectic as the décor.” The restaurant, whose guests sometimes include Sting and Trudi Styler who have a house nearby, has a menu that changes monthly. Diners can expect to find oak smoked duck crostini, Urswick steak and Hyderabad chicken.

This summer new works by leading contemporary artists including the sculptor Ron Mueck, street artist Slinkachu and Mat Collishaw of the Young British Artists movement, will fill the beautiful grounds and historic rooms at Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens, a property in the care of English Heritage near Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Open this month and running until 26th September 2010, Extraordinary Measures explores and plays with the concept of scale. A giant figure sits in the library, fairies and miniature day-trippers can be found in the grounds, and visitors are reduced to tiny figures as they pass through a huge window in the Quarry Garden. It is the sixth in the series of contemporary art exhibitions to be staged at Belsay.

A week after a team of archaeologists claimed to have discovered Noah’s Ark atop a mountain in Turkey, organisers of Britain’s newest cycle of Mystery Plays are giving the public a chance to see the famous tale given a modern makeover. Noah’s Ark Ministries International, a Christian group based in Hong Kong claimed to have found the original ark atop Mount Ararat in Eastern Turkey – sparking a major media storm over the authenticity of the find.

The Durham Mystery Plays – Britain’s newest and most modern reinterpretation of the Bible’s ancient stories about human morals – includes a version of the Ark story called Noah and the Fludd, by award-winning ‘Skellig’ author, David Almond, and takes place from 27th to 29th May 2010 in Durham’s historic Cathedral city. Organisers hope the find will spark public interest in the story and other such biblical tales.
