London Cabbie’s guide to eating in London

Every city and town has it’s little hidden gems when it comes to places to eat or as my grandmother told me – always eat where the locals eat. But how do you find such places in somewhere as large as London?

The answer it turns out is to ask the people who probably know London the best, it’s London cab drivers. Not only are they experts on the roads having passed “The Knowledge”* and of course have an opinion on every subject under the sun, but they are also very knowledgeable when it comes to eating out.

With this in mind, Andrew Spooner of the Guardian took a ride with his neighbour ‘Mudzi’ Mehmet around some of the best of cafes in London and presents it in a video (link below) to help all of us non-Londoners find those secret places where the locals eat.

Of course this isn’t exactly dining out at the Ritz or Thirteen, but at least you also don’t need a famous name and a second mortgage to eat breakfast this way.

* For those unfamiliar with London, The Knowledge is a test taken by all London black cab (not mini-cab) drivers which can include memorising upto 320 routes plus all points of interest along the route. Whether this includes all the nice cafes remains a little unclear.

Great stuff what a guide, just the kind of food I love too. They should make it into a channel 4 doc. A cab drivers guide to London, I’d watch it.
