Enjoy a Mediaeval Christmas in Derbyshire

Filed under Accommodation, Attractions, Eating & Drinking, Events

One of Derbyshire’s most historic houses will be transported back to its medieval origins this Christmas and visitors can join in with the unique celebrations. Lord Edward Manners opens the doors of Haddon Hall near Bakewell in Derbyshire from 4th to 12th December 2010 with a programme of events throughout the week illustrating how our Tudor ancestors enjoyed the Christmas festivities.

Traditional decorations and lighting will adorn the medieval house and the big open fires will be ablaze giving visitors an atmospheric taste of life with the Tudors. A variety of activities and entertainment will take place during both weekends with The Tudor Group demonstrating authentic Christmas preparations on 4th and 5th December, and traditional music and carols performed by local choirs and musicians on 11th and 12th December.

On Wednesday and Thursday evenings there will be ‘Christmas by Candlelight’ with the Chesterfield Operatic Society providing music and entertainment with the help of local actors and the Haddon Hall Choir. Tickets for these evenings cost £15 and pre-booking is essential.

Visitors wishing to combine their visit to Haddon with a hotel stay need look no further than The Peacock Hotel which is a small luxury hotel owned by Lord Manners and situated in nearby Rowsley. The hotel is one of only a handful across the country to merit three AA Red Stars and has 16 luxuriously appointed rooms offering guests the opportunity to relax and enjoy a fine dining experience.

Haddon Hall will be open from 10.30am to 4pm throughout the week with adults costing £8.95, concessions £7.95 and children £4.95. There will be a full range of festive fayre available in the licensed restaurant in the old stable block and the gatehouse gift shop will have a range of unusual Christmas gifts and souvenirs.
