Could relics like Brighton’s West Pier be the new crumbling castles?

Travel writer Chris Leadbeater posed a few interesting questions recently about Brighton’s West Pier which made me wonder – could relics like this become the new tourist attractions just like crumbling old castles?

The West Pier was closed in 1975 and after years of battering by the sea, was eventually destroyed by two fires in 2002, leaving only the iron structure to rise out of the English Channel. Previously I’d always looked at this and wondered why it wasn’t knocked down as it seemed to be an eyesore, but then I began to wonder – what is the difference between the West Pier and say Kendal Castle, both of which are simply shells.

There are plenty of people who would be horrified if this or any other crumbling old castle was to be pulled down even though they serve little practical purpose beyond being of interest to tourists. Given a few more years and a little marketing, could Brighton’s West Pier be classified under the same criteria as somewhere to view, if not perhaps visit directly?

You could argue that a rusty old structure doesn’t have the same appeal as a stone castle, but then an awful lot of people visit the Angel of the North which is rusty by design and I’ve not heard too many complaining about that being an eyesore. Rather all the people from Gateshead I’ve seen comment on it have been very proud of it.

Whether this applies to Brighton’s West Pier, that I’ll have to let you decide, but perhaps its not quite as bad as it first appeared?

For kids who are fans of the hit ITV show “I’m a celebrity, get me out of here”, but don’t really want to fly to Australia, then the London Zoo BedBUGS sleepovers are ideal.

Each year between March and October, the keepers of London Zoo open it up to small groups of kids overnight with talks, walks around the zoo and most important of all – a sleepover in the ‘BUGS’ insect house.

Many of the London Zoo creatures are actually more active once the majority of visitors have gone home so you’ll get a chance to see the lions, ant eaters and camels with only a torch to light your way.

After the tours, the kids and adults bed down in the insect house where once it’s quiet you can hear the cockroaches chattering away or look in the spider section at the Black Widow which is so deadly the zoo has to keep antidote on-site just incase a keeper is bitten.

Places are limited and 2010 is sold out, but tickets will go on sale for the 2011 sleepovers from this December. For more details and to register your interest, see the London Zoo BedBUGS sleepover web site.

Has the Retallack Resort in Cornwall made the beaches redundant?

I would have loved it if someone had created the Retallack Resort 20 years ago, as finally it would have lived up to what the brochures of the holiday parks promised but never quite delivered on.

The Retallack Resort has arrived in Cornwall (only 20 years too late) and are promising five star accommodation and facilities, but can they deliver more than just the hype? Going by the report in the Daily Mail from Simon Hepinstall, it appears they can. In fact they go much further than anything I ever dreamed about on a self-catering park.

Accommodation: The most important part for me at least, and the Retallack Resort won’t disappoint. There are various sizes available from two bedroom to six bedrooms, and even the mid sized ones have two large balconies, two lounges, four bedrooms and three bathrooms. All this is set in a countryside-like setting.

Inside the cabins haven’t skimped on quality either with solid oak floors, granite and marble surfaces, Egyptian cotton sheets, satellite TV, five-ring gas hobs and free Internet access.

Facilities and activities: One thing that is probably very unique to this resort is a reception and concierge desk. The latter is generally used for obtaining services outside the establishment, but I guess even with everything at Retallack some people might still want to explore the wonders of Cornwall (highly recommended).

The Flowrider surf machine is one of only three in Britain with the others being in Jersey and Bedfordshire (at an activity centre). Essentially the Flowrider is a static surf machine that lets anyone surf in safety and without worrying about dipping into the freezing cold English channel. Lessons are available and probably needed initially, but this is going to be seriously popular.

There are more plans to expand the site which will include various restaurants, spas, kids’ clubs and watersports, including a man-made beach and a waterside row of ’surf pod’ apartments. The most unique feature will be the world’s first surf wave pool which it’s claimed will be able to create a 7ft high wave that can travel a massive 100 yards….surfs up dude!

Prices: The all important question, how much is this going to cost aka. are you going to need to talk to your bank manager (as the TV adverts keep telling us to)? Prices run from around £295 for a 3 night break in December, up to £2,050 for the large cabins in peak season. Some activities are additional extras.

It might be quite a lot, but for what you’re getting that still seems pretty good value for money.

More details: There’s more information on the Retallack Resort web site.

There’ll be Blue Birds over the White Cliffs of…Sussex?

Not sure what Dame Vera Lynn would think of that version, but Dover council have been caught advertising the delights of the white cliffs of Sussex, not Dover on their new tourism web site.

The white cliffs do indeed stretch well down the coastline from Dover to the Isle of Wight, but it’s the “White Cliffs of Dover” which have become iconic, mostly as that is the first sign cross channel ferry visitors get that they are approaching England.

Dover council wanted a new tourism web site, but they wanted to keep costs down in line with current budget cuts, but were unable to find a copyright free image of the white cliffs around Dover, so they resorted to using one of the Sussex coastline near the Isle of Wight. When this was spotted, the residents of Dover were to say the least a little miffed that their neighbours were being promoted rather than them.

No doubt Sussex council are delighted by this as they will receive a lot of free tourism publicity, but at least from my experience they already have the distinct advantage that the cliffs around Sussex are much more accessible without needing a boat to access them.

Editorial comment: As a company who’ve been in web design for over 15 years, we’re a little baffled as to why they had so much trouble here especially as there are now web sites which will provide high quality licensed photographs for a couple of pounds.

The Canterville Ghost at Holkham

The Marble Hall at Holkham, Wells-next-the-Sea in Norfolk is the spectacular setting for the ghostly Oscar Wilde tale called The Canterville Ghost which will take place on Sunday 12th December 2010.

Performed by the Rain or Shine Theatre Production Company the story takes place just before Christmas in 1884 at the ancestral family home haunted by the 300 year old ghost of Sir Simon de Canterville and concerns his dealings with the new owners of the house, the Otises from America.

The culture clash that ensues as the brash new American materialism and the old British tradition battle it out for control of the house is charming, witty and at times farcical! With numerous carols in the story and a christmassy feel, the production is one for all of the family to enjoy.

The Canterville Ghost was Wilde’s first short story and remains to this day one of his most popular pieces of writing.

There will be two performances of the play – a matinee at 2pm and an evening performance at 6.30pm. Tickets will include a glass of mulled wine and mince pie and will cost £16.00 for Adults and £12.00 for children.

Today the government has announced that it will invest £8 billion into Britain’s railway system. According to the BBC, the plans put forward by the Transport Secretary Philip Hammond include the following:

  • delivering 2,100 new rail carriages by May 2019, increasing capacity by 17%, creating space for an extra 185,000 passengers
  • 650 of these carriages will be delivered by 2014; the previous Labour government had promised 1,300
  • up to 1,200 carriages for the Thameslink programme (Bedford to Brighton through London) although the programme will be completed two years later than planned
  • 600 carriages for the Crossrail project (east to west through London)
  • electrification of commuter services on the Great Western route between London and Didcot, Oxford and Newbury over the next six years
  • electrification of the lines between Liverpool, Manchester, Preston and Blackpool
  • but electrification of the London-Swansea line has been delayed.
