Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market

One of the biggest of the German Christmas markets in the country, the Birmingham Frankfurt market has everything from traditional German food to crafts and entertainments.

The market has proven extremely popular over the years with around 200 German stalls this year selling a whole range of goods. As with most Christmas German markets, many of the stalls sell traditional German foods such as bratwurst (grilled sausages), waffles and gluhwein (mulled wine). Plus of course there is plenty of German beer on hand to keep the chill out.

Alongside the stalls there is also live music and a fairground carousel to add to the festive atmosphere. The market runs until the 23rd December so is ideal for those last minute presents.

More information on the Birmingham Frankfurt Christmas Market web site.

A magical Christmas at Belfast Zoo

Belfast Zoo is running a series of Christmas events for kids and adults alike, but along with the usual meeting Santa and such, you can watch when the animals get their presents too.

On Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th December the kids of course get to meet Santa and his elves (who do seem to be getting around this month), plus at various times the Gorillas, elephants, chimps and even Andean bears get their own Christmas presents.

There are also craft sessions and feeding time for numerous other animals such as the sea lions and otters, although it is presumably to wrap a fish in Christmas paper.

A full rundown of all the events can be found on the Belfast Zoo Christmas web page.

The five best carol concerts for Christmas 2010

Away from the school carol concerts and Salvation Army singing in the town centre, these concerts feature some of the best choirs in the world singing traditional carols this Christmas.

Carols on the Hill in Windsor takes place from 6pm tonight and features The Band of Blues and Royals, more commonly seen during royal and state occasions. The concert will take place at the gates of Windsor Castle and is entirely free to watch. Friday 17th December, 6pm.

Durham Cathedral plays host to Liam Jones and Ella Taylor who were the two winners of the BBC Young Choristers of the Year 2010. They will be accompanied by the cathedral organist and a brass ensemble, and this will be the first time christmas Carols have been sung in the cathedral since girls were admitted to the cathedral choir school in 2009. Performances from 18th December, 7.30pm – call 0191-332 4041 for tickets.

Kenilworth Castle in Warwickshire is one of England’s most spectacular medieval ruins, and on the 18th December the Kenilworth Lions perform with the Coventry Salvation Army brass band and local schoolchildren. Tickets are £3 plus English Heritage admission charges. The concert runs from 6pm.

Stirling Castle will be the splended backdrop for the National Youth Choir of Scotland on the 19th December from 6 – 8.30pm.

Trafalgar Square in London is essentially a giant choir with both formal singers and everyone else in the square encouraged to join in with the carols. This runs until the 22nd December from 5pm-9pm.

The top 10 best mince pies for this Christmas

If you’re still mulling over what to feed your guests this Christmas, one of the most important aspects has to be the traditional mince pies. With the help of the Independent, we run down the 10 best mince pies you can buy.

1. Fortnum & Mason Almond mince pies are probably some of the most expensive out there, but they are probably the nicest and maybe the biggest too. The pies are definitely a post-lunch delight and possibly mid-afternoon or evening “snack” due to their quite sizeable nature. £9.95 for six pies.

2. Marks and Spencer have been one of the premier names in all things Christmas food for many years, but this year they are doing “mini mince pies” which makes a nice change. Another difference this year is of the 12 you get, eight have no lid to the mince pie and each row comes in a different flavour. £3 for 12 pies.

3. Sharpham Park are offering “spelt mince pies” made from organic spelt flour which is generally regarded as a healthier version of normal flour, plus being organic it might be better for the environment. Surprisingly however, many sources we’ve checked suggest the Sharpham Park mince pies are just as tasty as those made with normal flour and might be especially suitable for those with a minor wheat allergy.

4. Netto Cake Collection – that is Netto te budget supermarket, but don’t dismiss them just yet as the Cake Collection has the approval of some very good chefs including Pierre Koffmann who said they come second only to Fortnum’s mince pies which are around seven times the price. £1.39 for six pies – bargain!

5. Harrods Cranberry mince pies were naturally always going to appear on such a list. Exactly how much work goes into calculating the exact thickness of the pies and the constancy of the filling we’re not sure, but one does have to suspect this is a rather military operation. They are of course a little more expensive than many, but not the most expensive on this list at £7.95 for six.

6. Daylesford Organic mince pies are hand made on the Bamford family estate and come in an elegant black box, winning them the best presented pies in this list. According to those who’ve tasted them, the pies are just right with a slight hint of spice, but not overdoing it. At £5.95 for six they are also mid-priced.

7. Tesco Finest offer one of the best value mince pie collections on the market made with butter shortcrust pastry and “laced with Courvoisier VS Cognac” (that’s how Tesco describe them). There’s plenty of orange peel in there too, which is what a mince pie should have. £2 for six makes them a real good find and you can have them delivered with your shopping.

8. Duchy Originals with Royal approval from the Cornwall Duchy estate are available at Waitrose. With a very lemon and orange flavour and organic wheat. £3.99 for six pies.

9. Harvey Nichols mini mince pies are following the same idea as Marks and Spencers with small bitesized mince pies, best suited as a canapé. They cost £5.95 for eight pies.

10. Waitrose own all-butter mince pies are the final one which at just £2.29 for six is remarkably good value compared to their usual selection. These pies have apricots drenched in brandy and are stuffed with glacé cherries to make them a little different to the norm.

List inspired by the gallery of mince pies in the Independent.

Christkindelmarkt Christmas German market in Leeds

Over the last few years, Christmas German Markets seem to have sprung up all over the place as the people of Britain discover there’s a little more to Christmas than turkey, turkey and turkey leftovers.

One such popular market is the Christkindelmarkt* which is held in the Millennium Square in Leeds city centre from November to the 19th December, so you still have a couple of days left for those last minute Christmas presents.

The market is mostly based around German foods with such favourites as Glühwein and Bratwurst available, alongside various gifts and crafts. More details on the Leeds Christkindelmarkt web site.

* Although Leeds city council call this the Christkindelmarkt, it seems the real German spelling is Christkindlmarkt according to Google.

Big Red Tenby Boxing Day Swim (for the slightly insane)

0

There’s something about running into a freezing cold sea around Christmas to New Year, and it seems the people of Tenby in South Wales don’t want to be left out so hundreds of them take to the water on Boxing Day.

Maybe there is a secret cure to hangovers, or perhaps it’s just a good excuse for a brandy or two afterwards, but if you’re on North Beach in Tenby around 11am on Boxing Day you’ll see hundreds of bathers running down the beach into the sea. Most will be raising money for various charities during the event, so there is a little more logic to this.

Plenty of them will be dressed as Santa and various other fancy dress costumes, so if you fancy a dip and are in the Tenby area, why not pop over to the Tenby Boxing Day swim web site.

Other events around this time include the Peel New Years Day Dip and the Christmas Day Peter Pan Cup.

Visit Rudolf’s cousins at the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre

We can’t guarantee any of them will have a red nose, but if you want to chat to a reindeer without sneaking downstairs on Christmas Eve then head for the Cairngorm Mountains in Scotland.

The Cairngorm Reindeer Centre has the only permanent reindeer herd in Britain with around 130 animals which range across the Easterrn Highlands of Scotland. The reindeer have a wide grazing area, but the centre offers daily excursions to the hilltop grazing grounds, reindeer treks and paddock visits.

In the current weather they should be feeling very much at home and who knows, maybe if you’re really really nice to them, they might tell you the secret of Ruddolf flying tricks and if he likes to scare Santa with acrobatics…

Christmas “Pud-icure” therapy at Browns Hotel

0

Brown’s Hotel in London have come up with a rather unusual treatment for tired feet this Christmas – the Pud-icure.

As the name hints, this treatment essentially involves a pedicure style of foot relaxation, but instead of the usual creams and potions, the therapists use ingredients such as treacle and cinnamon!

Apparently using food ingredients really does work with treacle for foot massages; sugar, sultanas and apricot as a exfoliator and cinnamon paraffin wrap as a detox agent.

If you’ve done all the Christmas shopping and want to give your feet a Christmas present, ask the therapists at Browns Hotel in Mayfair to give them a little au-natural TLC.

Treatments cost £85 for 90 minutes and are available until January 31st.
