How we can help UK tourism businesses

0

Normally on the UKseries.com UK travel blog, we bring you news from within the industry, interesting tidbits, new developments, and so on and so forth.  For this post, we’re going to have a short break from that and explain some of the ways that we can help businesses in the UK that have an association with the tourism and leisure industries.  First, we’ll give a very brief background to the UKseries.com suite of sites and then secondly, we’ll explain how we can help if you’re involved in the industry.

Background

UKseries.com is a network of sites owned and run by The Dedicated Partnership Ltd., a company that has been at the forefront of the online marketing of tourism ever since the Web first came along in 1993, and that has created websites for tourist boards, top hotels, tourist attractions and more.  We were one of the first in on the scene (and one of the few that were around then that are still around today!).  It wasn’t until 6 years later, though, that we began work on the first UKseries site, which was UKhotel.com. The success of this site meant that others quickly followed, including UKbed.com, UKcottage.com, UKcampsite.com, UKattraction.com, etc. and there are around 15 sites now within the UKseries brand.

During all this time, we’ve kept up with the latest developments on the Web, embraced social media and continued to enhance the sites.  We also work very hard on the marketing of the sites which, in our opinion, is the singlemost important factor in making websites work.  Collectively, the UKseries sites serve in excess of 2 million visitors per year, we have more than 500,000 pages spidered in Google, over 2,000 fans on our main Facebook page, and more than 40,000 users follow our main Twitter account.  But it doesn’t stop there. We have niche-specific Facebook fan pages – our London Facebook fan page, for example, has more than 40,000 fans. We also have a second Twitter account geared specifically towards special offers within the UK tourism industry and this has almost 10,000 followers.  We have always done extremely well in the search engines; for instance, we have occupied the top spot on Google for a search for ‘uk hotels’ for around 10 years now (you’ll also see us in the top 10 for searches such as ‘uk cottages’ and ‘uk attractions’ plus a whole host of other terms). Our success has made us among the top affiliate partners for the likes of leading brands such as Premier Inn, Travelodge and Hoseasons.

How we can help

The first and most obvious way in which we can help businesses is by listing them on the most relevant UKseries site that we run.

Joining one of our sites costs just £49+VAT per annum.

Other ways we can help

In addition to the above, there are lots of other ways we can help (both free and paid opportunities).  You can send news in for our blog, you can be a guest blogger, you can promote events, you can promote offers, you can get involved in our forums, you can run competitions, we can help you with your own online marketing, and much, much more.  If you’d like more details, just get in touch.

Hats on show at Royal Ascot

Royal Ascot kicked off yesterday – celebrating its historic tercentenary (300th anniversary) – and, as usual, it wasn’t just the horse racing that was the order of the day. Fashion – and hats, in particular – were as usual high on the agenda, none more so that this rather bizarre offering: an iPad hat.  You might have thought Beatrice’s rather unusual hat worn at the Royal Wedding earlier this year would have taken some beating in the absurdity stakes, but clearly not. And, by the way, to all the doubters out there… yes… this is a real hat, not just someone playing around with Photoshop.

For more weird and wonderful offerings, see the video…

Would a £1 a night tourist tax in Cornwall matter?

1

Council officials in Cornwall are said to be considering levying a £1 a night tourist tax for anyone staying in a hotel, B&B or holiday cottage. The county swells in size in the Summer months to more than 5 million people, compared with the out of season figure of 500,000, and it’s being argued that this is putting a strain on local services.  The proposals don’t appear to have the backing of those involved in the tourist industry in the area, presumably because it might make some visitors consider going to other destinations where the tax is not levied.  Would a £1 a night tourist tax deter you from visiting Cornwall, and would this be a dangerous move by the council?

The best of Welsh outdoor action

0

Wales has been a focal point for outdoor action for over a century, from Victorian climbers in hobnailed boots clattering around the peaks of Snowdonia, to 21st Century wakeboarders skimming across the waters of nearby Abersoch Bay during the annual Wakestock Festival. There are endless opportunities to get your outdoor kicks year round.

From November to Februaury, you have the perfect opportunity to discover the wintry grandeur of Wales’ hills and mountains, perhaps in Snowdonia, the Berwyn Mountains or Brecon Beacons. If you don’t have the experience to tackle the demanding conditions, get up to speed with a winter skills course first.

When winter subsides and thoughts turn to shorts and T-shirts, Pembrokeshire is the place to be – the combination of mild Gulf Stream waters and quality waves means that May will probably see the annual Welsh National Surfing Championships taking place at spectacular Freshwater West.

And even if splashing around on a boogie board is as close as you ever get to surfing, both Pembrokeshire and the Gower Peninsula have got to be worth a visit for their surf scenes.

If you’d prefer to paddle your own canoe – or to be technically correct, kayak – Pembrokeshire summers offer a great chance to explore magnificent offshore islands such as Ramsey and Skomer. Back up in North Wales, Anglesey provides kayakers of all levels of ability with a fine mix of wide sandy bays and dramatic sea cliffs.

OK, maybe water isn’t your thing? No problem – just hop on two-wheels for superb year-round mountain biking at one of the country’s world class purpose built sites – wherever you are in Wales, you’ll never be far from some quality off-road action. Or you could explore Wales from an angle those Victorian mountain climbers probably never imagined – coasteering.

Invented in Pembrokeshire and exported worldwide, this mix of climbing, cliff jumping, swimming and scrambling around the rugged coastline shows that Wales is never short on new ideas for making the most of the great outdoors. Though perhaps that other great Welsh invention of bog snorkelling is pushing it a bit…

London’s open private gardens this weekend

0

This weekend, over 200 London private gardens will open up to the public including some very rarely seen by anyone.

The event is called the London Open Garden Squares Weekend and is a collaboration of a number of organisations and private garden owners, who allow the public into their private little gardens for one weekend a year.

Some gardens you have to pre-book such as the private gardens of HMP Wormwood Scrubs for rather obvious reasons, but most you’ll be able to visit with your ticket anytime they’re open. This year there’s even a garden on top of a supermarket.

There are 31 new gardens this year making 214 gardens opening up to the public in total.

Tickets are currently £7.50 per person which gets you access to every garden over the weekend.

The official London Open Garden Squares web site has more details, but for a better map we recommend the Ian Visits London Gardens map.

London Olympic torch design is revealed

0

The London Olympic Organising Committee have revealed what the London Olympic Torch actually looks like with its triangular shape and very light weight design.

As with many such projects, a lot of symbolism was used in the design with the triangular shape meant to represent several aspects of the London Olympics.

1) The 3 Olympic values of respect, excellence and friendship.
2) The UK has hosted the Olympic games a total of 3 times.
3) The London Olympic vision to join sport, education and culture.

The torch weighs around 800g which makes it one of the lightest ever created – good news for those carrying it! It was also designed and created in Britain by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, then Tecosim and The Premier Group.

There are 8000 small holes drilled into the torch which represent the 8000 torchbearers and their stories. These holes also no doubt help with the overall weight.

The torch will start its journey from Land’s End on 19th May and go round the country on an 8000 mile journey, before arriving at the Olympic stadium on the 27th July for the opening ceremony.

Photographs of the Dolphins around Britain’s coastline

Dolphins seem to be one of the most admired creatures around, perhaps because of their intelligence or curiosity towards people, but many don’t realise you don’t need to travel to exotic lands to have a close encounter.

Swimming with dolphins is popular in the Mediterranean and Middle East especially, but these amazing creatures also turn up around Britain’s shoreline quite often, especially in the quieter waters off the north of Scotland.

Occasionally one of them will get also appear in the more popular waters around the south coast as was the case with “Dave”, who incidently turned out to be female, and appeared a few years ago one Summer off the Kent coastline. She became a popular attraction and many questioned if this was Dolphin watching or perhaps people watching on Dave’s part?

One person who has been facinated by these creatures since Dave’s appearance is Terry Whittaker and being a keen photographer, he has travelled around the country taking pictures of Dolphins from Sandgate in Kent where Dave made her appearance to the cold windy beaches off Scotland where large pods of up to 20 dolphins can be found playing in the water.

For a photographic view of the dolphins around Britain’s coastline, see the Telegraph’s dolphin photos exhibition. The ones further down are the best.
