The newly named Royal Wootton Bassett

Thousands of people have lined the streets of Wootton Bassett today as the town takes on a new title: Royal Wootton Bassett. Its the first time in over a century (since Royal Tunbridge Wells in 1909) that a place has been granted such an honour. In Wootton Bassett’s case, it’s to honour its role in repatriating British military personnel killed in war. Signs have already been erected to mark the change.

It was a fabulous, sunny day! The Lion on the new coat of arms (same as the 3 lions on the England arms) is only allowed when great service to the nation and the crown has been given, I discovered today. As well as military parades and Princess Anne presenting the scroll, a video was shown of the townsfolk singing “Wake me up when September ends” by Green Day, in aid of military charities.
