My gran used to claim it was often “too cold to snow” even if this was never scientifically proven, but as Britain gets rather chilly why not put the weather to good use and try a little ice sculpting?
Surprisingly you don’t need to fly off to the aptly named Iceland or perhaps Norway as ice sculpting courses are available right here in the UK – in Tooting, London for instance.
We can’t promise that you’ll be immediately be able to create an elegant swan or a spectacular carriage [click for images] but going by a piece in the Guardian about ice sculpture courses it seems even those with no sculpting experience can produce something to be quite proud of.
Unless you happen to have a portable freezer or frozen display cabinet, the creations will naturally melt away but as Duncan from Hamilton Ice Sculptors said “You have to remember, that the lack of permanence is what’s attractive. Being an artist is about the process. Once a piece is finished, it’s time to move on”.
A few of the ice sculpting courses available in the UK:
- Hamilton Ice Sculptors
- Team Tactics ice sculpture courses
- Ice sculpture courses at London Ice Sculpture Festival (13th & 14th Feb only).
