The Highland Games will return to North Berwick on August 8th 2009. This year will mark the 14th anniversary of the event. The North Berwick Highland Games has grown from a small, niche event to a sporting spectacular that attracts upwards of 14,000 people each year.

This year’s events include a pipe band competition, a dog obedience training show, and the traditional highland sporting events of the Belhaven Best Heavy Events Championship; such as throwing the 16lb Scot’s Hammer and Tossing the Caber. There are six sporting events in total, with the Championship being awarded to the competitor gaining the maximum points combined from all six events. To see the huge, heavy timber caber being tossed is perhaps the most dramatic highlight of any Highland Games.

There’s something for everyone at the North Berwick Highland Games.

There will be public games screenings, and a Dare ProtoPlay showcase, which will allow visitors to see some of the best games created by entrants in the Dare to Be Digital game development competition.

Entry to the screenings, showcases, and gaming area is free. There will also be a recruitment area where members of the public can learn about the games industry, and find out about current job opportunities. Those interested in attending the conferences will need to purchase a delegate’s pass.

Chris Deering, Chairman of the EIF, said “Every year the interactive world of entertainment evolves in scope and amazing creativity. The Edinburgh Interactive Festival embraces the ‘new shoots’ and helps us enjoy the progress rather than be intimidated by it. Edinburgh is a unique celebration of the creative culture of games.”
