Look up and see terrifying sharks swimming above, including the Sand Tiger shark, the largest shark on display. Wonder at the mysterious coral reefs and make sure you are there for the spectacular sight of the piranha feed. Deep Sea World also has a seal sanctuary with two seal pools, one for resident seals and the other with injured and rescued seal pups. Go underwater at Deep Sea World and witness some spectacular marine life. The more adventurous can even go diving with the sharks.

There’s a fantastic ‘Kids go free’ offer on the seven-night Guided Walking for Families holiday – starting 21st August 2010 – on the Isle of Arran where the company is offering one free child place – valid for children up to 17 years – per one full paying adult. Based on sharing an ensuite family room, the price per adult is £613 inclusive of accommodation at the company’s Altachorvie Country House.

The choice of guided walks each walking day – easier for younger kids and harder for active teenagers – include highlights such as the mysterious standing stones on Macrie Moor, a coastal walk to Lochranza and scrambling on Goatfell ridge.

Or, head to Exmoor on a seven-night Guided Walking for Families holiday – starting 14th August 2010 – at Holnicote House near Selworthy which, based on sharing an en-suite family room, costs £649 per adult, £324 per child (aged four-17 years and sharing with two adults) and under fours are free of charge.

Walking options include climbing Selworthy Beacon, looking for herds of red deer and wild ponies on moorland and woodland and taking in the high sea cliffs along the South West Coast Path.

All prices include full board, the programme of organised walks and social activities, transport to/from the walks, plus the services of an HF Holidays’ walks leader.

The Island of Barra forms part of the Outer Hebrides, a chain of islands off the north west coast of Scotland offering visitors a genuine escape from modern life without losing all the comforts of home. Barra is the most southerly of the inhabited islands in the Outer Hebrides, at just five miles wide and eight miles long, and is most noted for it’s spectacular coastal scenery.

Visitors can arrive at Barra by ferry from the mainland, but the preferable way has to be to fly in and land at one of the most unusual airports in the world. Barra has no standard airport or runway, so planes land on the beach at Cockle Strand in between the tides.

On arrival, visitors can take a private charter boat trip out around the island and have a good chance of catching sight of porpoise, seals, otters and various seabirds found regularly around the Barra coastline.

For something a little more adventurous, why not try sea kayaking? This gives unique access to the coves and inlets around the coastline which are otherwise inaccessible, and even more chances to see the local wildlife.

As a destination for unwinding and experiencing nature at it’s finest, Barra is hard to beat.

Cyclists touring the UK seeking value accommodation will find a great selection on offer from the Independent Hostels UK network (IHUK) of over 300 houses, cottages, camping barns and bunkhouses, many of which have overnight bike storage. They generally provide self-catering facilities and are suitable for singles, couples and groups seeking friendly, clean and inexpensive accommodation without membership requirements; prices start from around £8 per night.

Amongst those with bike storage is the Yarde Orchard bunkhouse, which lies near Petersmarland on the North Devon Tarka Trail’s highest point; two of the Sustrans National Cycle Network (NCN) long distance routes also pass the gate, namely the Devon Coast-to-Coast route 27 and the West Country Way, route 3. Prices here start from £8 per night for under 18s and £12 for adults.

Puttenham eco camping barn, near Guildford, Surrey is located in the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, ideal for cyclists riding the North Downs Way and NCN route 22. An overnight stay is £10 for under 18s and £12 for adults but anyone arriving by bike receives a £2 ‘green’ discount.

The Dales Bike Centre is right on the Yorkshire Dales Cycle Way near Fremington providing an ideal base for cycling in the area. The four-star graded hostel has a café and bike shop plus bike hire, workshop and secure storage facilities; from £24 per night for bunk bed and breakfast.

Wales is well served by the IHUK network with 65 places from which to choose. Three bunkhouses in Powys, for example, have bike storage, namely Trericket Mill, near Erwood on NCN route 8; Beili Neuadd at Rhayader and Plasnewydd, near Llanidloes, which also offers bike hire – these are from £12.50 per night. Piggery Poke, a 4-star hostel near Felinwynt, is on the Celtic Way long distance cycle route and just four miles from the challenging Lôn Teifi which links Fishguard with Aberystwyth (from £15 per night).

In Scotland Trossachs Tryst is a purpose built hostel set amidst beautiful scenery near Callander, Perthshire. It’s on the NCN route 7c and has an on-site cycling centre which also sells basic provisions; prices from £15 per night.

To help cyclists choose the hostel that’s right for them, the IHUK produce a neat, annual handbook that will fit easily into a rucksack, or large pocket. At least one page is devoted to each hostel with a full description of facilities, price guidelines, contact details and colour photographs. Copies can be purchased (£4.95 each plus £1.50 postage and packing) from their website.

Popular for generations as a quiet retreat away, the Norfolk Broads is to undergo a “repositioning” to Britain’s Magical Waterland, courtesy of the local tourist boards. Repositioning referred to here is apparently a marketing term for rebranding or simply renaming the product, in this case the canals and scenery of the Norfolk Broads.

It seems the idea behind this is to make the broads as appealing as say the Florida Everglades on the world stage and introduce them to a much wider international travel market.

There is one question which doesn’t seem to have been asked – do many foreign visitors want to ride around on canal boats for a week or is this very much like the seaside holiday, a very British persuit?

Time will of course tell, but one does get the feeling that this might have a little more success if instead of making this sound like a ride at Alton Towers, they simply promoted the broads (sorry ‘Magical Waterland’) as a place to see nature at a relaxing pace.

If a holiday in the Norfolk Broads appeals, Hoseasons offer a number of starting points all around the area.

A new company has begun providing accommodation in real homes close to the Rowing and Canoeing Olympics 2012 venue at Dorney Lake near Windsor. Visitors can experience their stay in a real English home near the Rowing venue at Dorney Rowing Lake, just outside London, as homeowners in the area are letting their houses out to visitors using a company called Lakelets.

Windsor and the surrounding towns are close to London, but away from the hectic hustle and bustle of being in the capital. By renting a family home, visitors can experience the life of a local resident near the Queen at Windsor Castle.

Lakelets set up this service to cope with the demand anticipated for accommodation. Hotels are already receiving bookings, even those a fair drive away from the venue.

The Isle of Arran nestles just off the South West coast of Scotland in the Firth of Clyde making it both easy to reach and a truly relaxing destination.

The island is often described as Scotland in Miniature as it contains all the elements of this fine land with craggy mountains, stunning beaches and a more laid back approach to life than found in much of the rest of the UK.

For those looking for a little adventure during their trip, there are a wealth of activities including climbing, horseriding and paragliding as well as sea kayaking, abseiling and mountain biking.

Cycling is probably the best way to see the island at it’s best especially through the Brodick island country park with around 200 acres of parkland including woodland, meadows, ponds, gardens and also a castle.

Brodick Castle houses a glorious collection of furniture with some pieces dating from the 17th Century when the castle was the seat of the Dukes of Hamilton.

Arran offers something for everyone whether it be a day trip to see the castle or a long weekend. There are a number of hotels on Arran from family run B&Bs to 4 star hotels.

Ever wanted to just get away from it all and go somewhere where the brilliant white beaches meet turquoise waters and there is an abundance of wildlife?

You could re-mortgage your house and take a holiday in the Seychelles on your own private island…or perhaps stay a little closer to home and explore the natural beauty of the Outer Hebrides off the west coast of Scotland with a private yacht charter.

This way you get the best of both worlds – idylic coastlines and nature at it’s finest, combined with luxury accommodation and food.

There are a range of options available with an abundance of operators providing this service, from self-chartered boats to fully crewed yachts, although the latter is naturally a little more expensive.

Visit Scotland list a number of yacht hire companies offering this opportunity.

For those a little unsure about Scottish geography, the Outer Hebrides are the islands off the far west coast of Scotland (outside the Inner Hebrides), sometimes known as the Western Isles, including Lewis & Harris, North & South Uist, Barra and Grimsay.

I admit to having spent plenty myself when younger mostly around the south Devon, Dorset and Cornwall coastlines on beaches hunting for fossils.

During this period, many of the seaside resorts were in rather a bad way as more and more people deserted them for warmer climates and sangria’s in the sun, and a lot have declined to such a point that it is unclear how they could be revived.

However the good news is that around the turn of the Millennium, the seaside resort quietly started to become “hip” with the movers and shakers, and what they discover one year the rest of us usually pick up on soon after. It has taken a little longer than usual for the seaside to become cool again and a lot of investment money, but many resorts are now updating their image, repainting the buildings and generally trying to attract a new generation back to the wonders of the family seaside holiday.

As we reported a little while back, Weston-Super-Mare has spent £50m revamping the Weston-Super-Mare pier and other examples include the Art Deco Midland Hotel in Morecambe which underwent a huge restoration programme to bring the original building back to life.
