Attention won’t only be on the UK next year because of the London 2012 Olympics, but also because of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee which celebrates the Queen’s 60 years at the throne. And this week the official Diamond Jubilee china was launched. It is handmade and features a border decoration of gilded oak leaves, acorns and the national symbols of daffodil, rose and thistle, entwined over a blue base. Prices vary from £25 for a coffee mug to £175 for a Diamond Jubilee limited edition loving cup, and you can buy these and other items online at the Royal Collection Shop.

Thousands of people have lined the streets of Wootton Bassett today as the town takes on a new title: Royal Wootton Bassett. Its the first time in over a century (since Royal Tunbridge Wells in 1909) that a place has been granted such an honour. In Wootton Bassett’s case, it’s to honour its role in repatriating British military personnel killed in war. Signs have already been erected to mark the change.

Our A to Z of the UK is an opportunity for us all to share our knowledge of the UK and hopefully discover one or two gems along the way. Today we’d like to hear what your favourite place in the UK is, that begins with the letter ‘E’. It can be a city, a town or a tiny village. Or it can be something more specific such as a particular tourist attraction. Whatever or wherever it is, please post a comment and tell us what makes it special…

A new book is hitting the shelves and, perhaps surprisingly, one of Britain’s most popular attractions, Madame Tussaud’s, is on the authors’ hit list too. Crap Days Out has been penned by freelance journalists Gareth Rubin and Jon Parker. You can buy the book from Amazon for just £5.89 including postage and packing, and see for yourself which attractions have been brutally ridiculed.
