After a two year investigation into BAA’s dominance over airports in Scotland and South East England they have been ordered by The Competition Commission to sell its airports at Gatwick, Stansted and either Edinburgh or Glasgow. They must be sold within the next two years and Gatwick will go first, the sale of which has already begun. The Commission states that the lack of competition between airports owned by BAA is detrimental to passengers and as a result three must be sold. The airport operator argues that analysis is flawed and “its remedies may be impractical in current economic conditions.” However Virgin Atlantic praise the Commission stating “The break up of BAA is something Virgin Atlantic has requested for many years. Better airport facilities in the UK and lower prices will be the result and we therefore congratulate The Competition Commissions on its findings.”
