Tourism in the UK in 2009?

Many in the UK tourist industry have high hopes for the year ahead.  With the pound weak relative to the euro, there’s a lot of talk of British citizens staying closer to home this year.  Not only that, but of course the weak currency also means that the UK is an attractive destination to overseas visitors looking to get the most for their money.  In the light of this, it’s perhaps a little surprising that VisitBritain are predicting a decline in the number of foreign tourists visiting our shores.

Personally I’m predicting a decline in UK tourists in the UK to be honest – have you seen the price of the hotels!? Spain however might do well out of this as Easyjet were cutting upto 25% off prices to some routes and although it might be a tad more expensive than last year, it’s still going to be a seriously cheap alternative….and quite a bit warmer.

Time will tell. But the outlook for tourism in Spain is pretty bleak this year. The country depends very much on UK visitors and it’s being predicted that Brits will travel abroad 20% less this year (see http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/travel/news/article5606671.ece ). As you’ll see from that article, the countries most affected in the back end of 2008 were France, Italy and Spain.

Turkey ought to do well out of this, with it not being dependent on the Euro, but I suppose it remains to be seen what fate is in store for the UK.
