A proposal has been put forward to ease traffic congestion in London city centre. Plans are to tell pedestrians how much time they have to cross the road in the hope that they walk faster at crossings. It is proposed that a system providing a countdown at traffic lights will speed pedestrians up or make them wait at the kerb for the next ‘green man’. A Transport for London representative says of the plans proposed by Mayor Boris Johnson “The mayor has made it clear that he wants to smooth traffic flow in the capital and get traffic moving more quickly.” We are assured that any changes will not compromise pedestrian safety and under present rule, pedestrians have 1.2 seconds to cover one metre of road. However there are concerns for the elderly and disabled who may find the reduced times mak ecrossing the road safely more difficult. Pedestrian countdowns are just one plan in a series of proposals to tackle congestion in the capital.
