The “Three Peaks of Yorkshire Club”

The “Three Peaks of Yorkshire” is the collective name for the Whernside, Ingleborough and Pen-y-ghent mountains situated between the Pennines and the Yorkshire Dales, best documented in Alfred Wainwright’s 1971 guidebook Walks in Limestone.

Tradition has it since the book was published, that anyone who is fit enough (and possibly insane enough) to complete this 24 mile walk in less than 12 hours should immediately become an a member of the so called “Three Peaks of Yorkshire Club”.

This tradition is still upheld today, so if you are pretty fit, like brisk walks and have your copy of Walks in Limestone available then why not give it a go and post a comment back if you actually make it?

From what I know of Wainwright, I do suspect this wasn’t entirely his plan in writing the guide, but I’m sure he would still approve.

I first completed the walk with a friend in the early 80’s in the alloted 12 hrs. we went on to complete it twice more in successive years but it never got any easier.
