Britain’s best curries

The curry seems to have become almost a British institution and although I can’t admit to being one of it’s fans, I have to take my hat off to anything that can overtake fish n’ chips in terms of popularity.

So with this in mind and help from VisitBritain here are a run down of some of the best curry houses in the country. Below are a selection of the best restaurants picked out.

The Brilliant in West London really is the name of the restaurant and by all accounts it might live up to it’s reputation with patronage from Prince Charles, Prime Ministers and stars of Bollywood (maybe the best guide of all).

The menu is described as Punjabi food with a Kenyan touch and rather helpfully it’s also the first restaurant in the UK to be assigned a licence to hold civil marriages. This presumably makes a change from the more traditional finger-buffet reception after the wedding?

The Moon Restaurant in Manchester is described as one of Manchester’s best kept food secrets, most noteably as it’s making it’s mark without being on the so called Curry Mile. The dishes are described as “fresh, fragrant and perfectly spicy” which for a non-curry person I guess means they’re really quite nice.

Lasan Restaurant in Birmingham was recently named best local restaurant by celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, and as this is Birmingham which seems to have become curry capital of the UK that is quite an honour.

The Dhabba Restaurant in Glasgow serves north Indian cuisine with a trendy twist. This restaurant has received numerous awards and offers real Indian food with a modern light setting. It also needs to be included as there are claims that Chicken Tikka Masala was invented in Glasgow.

Non of the above are what you could describe as Balti Houses but they have all taken the idea of the curry, added a little Britishness to it and proved that this is a dish with staying power.
