An ancient charter allows a Freeman of London to drive sheep across London Bridge, but sheep on Savile Row…?
Savile Row – famous as the tailoring capital of London – was this week introduced to the sheep which provide some of it’s finest quality wool during British Wool Week.
Around 20 sheep with their grass & fences were herded into the Central London street to promote wool which seems to have been enjoying rather a comeback in recent years, especially in the higher quality garments such as tweed jackets.
In fact to demonstrate the point, they even included two decidedly “not ever seen the countryside” farmer types to stand there in their neatly pressed tweed jackets and give Londoners the image that this is what the countryside looks like and how pretty are all these sheep.
I don’t want to destroy the cute image people have of the countryside, but absolutely no farmer I have ever met wears tweed or long boots and you will never ever see one wearing a tie…this is not Monarch of the Glen!
One photo that made me laugh was this one which translated from sheep to English basically means – “get off my land” (even if the sheep weren’t of the West Country variety).
There’s a load more photos of the event on the VisitLondon blog.
