100 feet above the London streets are three of the most magnificent gardens in London…complete with flamingos!
Looking up from Kensington High Street you might see the odd bit of foliage hanging over the edge of the former Derry and Toms department store building, giving a hint of what is up there.
It’s only when you ascend to the top of the building that you discover just what an amazing collection exists over 100 feet about the streets – like an oasis in the middle of London.
On the roof of the store are three magnificent themed gardens complete with buildings, plants, streams and wildlife.
1) The Spanish Garden is based upon the Alhambra in Granada, Spain, with fountains, vine-covered walkways and Chusan palms. There are colourful buildings and native plants all around the garden.
2) A Tudor style garden with archways, secret corners and hanging wisteria. There are also roses, lilies and lavender giving the all year round Summer feel to the garden.
3) The English woodland garden is the biggest with over 100 trees, a stream, and a garden pond that is the home to pintail ducks and four flamingos.
Alongside the gardens are the Babylon Restaurant and private club both of which have views out into the English woodland gardens. The gardens themselves are open to the public most of the year, except during private functions.
Wedding ceremonies and receptions are also available with private booking of the club and gardens.
If you don’t believe these are way up above Kensington, look at the gallery and picture 4 – that is the top of a church spire level with the Spanish Garden!
