The Savoy reveals a few of its celebrity guest secrets

Famously known for its discretion regarding not only which guests have stayed and their preferences, new cards have revealed a few tip-bits of celebrity life at the Savoy.

Trying to get any little bits of information about guests has always been almost impossible from the Savoy staff, but following the £220m makeover of the world famous London hotel, a few little bits have emerged, albeit about guests long since departed.

The tip-bits came from the old index cards once used for regular guests which included information such as the temperature of Richard Harris’ porridge, or that Marlene Dietrich liked to have a dozen pink roses and a bottle of Dom Perignon in her room on arrival. Such attention to detail is of course all part of the service for which guests pay handsomely, but with names such as Oscar Wilde, Lord Alfred Douglas, Laurence Olivier, Vivien Leigh and Winston Churchill on the guest-list there were always plenty of celebrities willing to pay for this.

So how long before we find out secrets about more modern celebrities? Well there are a few details out there such as the night Elton John left a bath running and flooded the rooms below, or when one of Bob Dillon’s guests threw a wine glass out of a window. However actual personal secrets – well the details are now officially held on computer, but the real details are in the memories of the staff and as Sean Davoren, the head butler of the Savoy is quoted as saying, “You’d have to cut my head off before I told you anything indiscreet about any of our guests”.

Perhaps we’ll just have to wait for the next refurbishment of the hotel to find out more…
