One of the most famous TV sets to ever grace British TV screens is going to move, cobble-by-cobble in 2011 to a new location across Manchester from its current Quay Street location.
The external set has undergone somewhat of an upgrade in the last year after the introduction of high definition TV on ITV with plastic bricks being replaced with real bricks and various other parts of the buildings having a repaint.
But now Granada who produce the countries longest running TV soap have announced they are going to move the entire street across Manchester to the new MediaCityUK development in Salford, although the location will still remain essentially a Manchester based production.
The exact logistics of this move hasn’t yet been announced especially as the show is now on five days a week, so presumably there would have to be some replication of sets as it moved, but reports suggest that much of the original set will be moved especially the well worn cobble stones. One can only guess that the storylines will simply move more indoor for a week or two while the move takes place.
It could be argued that Coronation Street is actually coming home with this move, as the original opening scenes from the soap were filmed in Archie Street in Salford close to its new base.
