If you’re looking for something new to do this year either on your own or with the kids, then here are a few things which will be opening for the first time in 2011.
- Cliveden house in Buckinghamshire is a grand historic house situated beside the River Thames. This year, the National Trust who own the building are building a maze to rival that of King William III Hampton Court, using the same 6 foot yew trees for the boundaries.
- If history is your forte, then head down to Dover on the 4th June where you’ll have a chance to explore the secret underground tunnels below Dover Castle. The tunnels have been used since Napoleonic times, and were especially important during WWII.
- The contemporary waterfront setting of the Museum of Liverpool is where you can learn about the region and the birth of the city, from stone age right through to the Beatles and modern day Liverpool. The museum is due to open in the Summer of 2011 with more details on their web site.
- Football is the national sport, therefore you’d expect there a National Football Museum and you won’t be disappointed if you visit Liverpool this Summer. The museum actually exists already in Preston, mostly because that was where the football league started, but it is moving to a much bigger premises this year. Exhibits include the the ball from the 1966 World Cup final and Maradona’s ‘hand of God’ goal shirt.
There are also plenty of things going on elsewhere, but since Machu Picchu is a little bit far from the UK borders we’ll let the Daily Mail tell you about those (scroll down below Thomas the Tank Engine).
