One of the first events after the London 2012 Olympic opening ceremony will be the cycling races, and today the Olympic Organizing Committee announced the routes the races will take.
The Olympic cycle races which will take place on the Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th July, will be roughly a figure of eight, with routes of 156 miles (250km) for the mens race and 87 miles (140km) for the women’s race. All races will start and finish on the Mall leading up towards Buckingham Palace, and pass venues such as Richmond Park, Bushy Park and Hampton Court Palace.
Organisers are hoping to emulate the success of the cycle races seen in the Beijing Olympics, with thousands of spectators lining London’s streets in a similar fashion to scenes during the London Marathon. The difference being that the cycle races will go a long way outside London right down to Guildford and Dorking, outside of the M25.
The fuller list of venues passed by the cycle route is (in no particular order):
- The Mall & Buckingham Palace
- Richmond Park
- Bushy Park
- The river Thames
- Hampton Court Palace
- Natural History Museum
- Putney Bridge
- Box Hill
- Dorking Cockrel
The entire route is also available on the London Olympics – Cycle Route PDF.
