According to the National Trust, we Brits just aren’t having enough outdoor picnics with only 42% of respondents actually having taken a picnic last year.
The self-styled bastion of all that is Middle England, suggests that unpredictable weather may be the main reason why we don’t favour this method of al fresco dining currently, although despite what the global warming enthusiasts would have us believe – Britain has never exactly had the most predictable weather.
Personally I’ve not done this for many years and the biggest thing which put me off wasn’t the weather, but the bugs especially wasps. We did try al fresco dining at a wildlife park a few months back, but even then we were spending more time fighting for our coke and chips with the wasps than eating them. In case you’re wondering, the wasps won.
My question to the gathered great and good, aka you dear reader, is this – did anyone really go on picnics every week during the Summer Holidays or was this a myth portrayed by the books like Swallows & Amazons and Enid Blyton books? Or is this perhaps a sneaky way to get more people to have picnics at the National Trust properties?
