Did you know that over half the UK population live within 2 miles of a publically accessible forest?
It seems neither do the vast majority of people according to a survey carried out for the Woodland Trust.
To counter this, the trust has brought together information from the Forestry Commission, the National Trust, Wildlife Trusts and RSPB into a single searchable database giving information on every aspect of all the UKs 14,000 publically accessible forests.
The new VisitWoods web site allows visitors to find out about access, wildlife and even upload their own pictures to the site, making it more of a forest-wiki than just some boring government database.
This is quite important following the scrapping of the government plans to sell off large chunks of the UKs forests, as the public have now for the first time really been engaged in the idea that they do have access to vast areas of the countryside.
