As we reported a couple of weeks ago, the Cornish Pasty can now only be made in Cornwall, so where about’s should we go to find the perfect Cornish pasty?
Lesley Gillilan of the Guardian is a Cornish national, so who better to create a list of the best places to sample this national dish.
Do remember of course, these producers only have to be in Cornwall to produce a Cornish Pasty, but must remember a few other points – most critically is that the pasty must be crimped on the side and not the top (the latter being a Devon Pasty apparently). Whether this helps the taste we’re not sure.
1) Sarah’s Pasty Shop in Looe is a family run small bakery which was started by Sarah and is now run by her daughter Lucy. All the ingredients are locally produced so you not only get a good pasty, but tick the “green” box too. Sarah’s Pasty Shop, Buller Street, Looe; Tel: 01503 263973
2) The Count House Café in Pendeen offers Cornish pasties made by Mrs Margaret Burford and possibly offers the best views while eating your pasty of all these bakeries. The bakery is also situated in the Geevor Tin Mine museum which is where the Cornish pasty started its life. Tel: 01736 788662
3) Horse and Jockey in St. Helston offers a range of Cornish pasties and provides the authentic pasty made with beef skirt and vegetables, wrapped in short-crust pastry. The small and medium pasty are recommended unless you’re really hungry. Tel: 01326 563 534
4) Ann’s Pasties in The Lizard are made by one of the experts in the Cornish Pasty by Ann Muller and can genuinely claim to be “home made”. Ann’s mother wrote a book on the Cornish Pasty, proving that there is a little more to this subject than simply one recipe. After lunchtime, Ann is sometimes available to show you how the pasty should be made. Tel: 01326 290889
5) Village Butchers near Falmouth are made from a steak recipe for that wholesome chunky texture. The butchers are in Trevellan Road, Mylor Bridge close to Falmouth, but well worth the visit. Tel: 01326 373713
