The organisers of the London Olympics have pulled off what is perhaps an even bigger achievement than hosting the games themselves – people waiting months to tour a building site.
The free tours of the London Olympic site were started a few months ago, but there are still quite long waits to take a bus tour around the main area which in a little over a years time will be playing host to the world. The bus tours take visitors around inside the Olympic village passed the Velodrome with its rather amazing curved roof (looks like it could host a special version of Starlight Express), and of course passed the main stadium itself.
Many areas are now finished such as the Olympic Velodrome although outside there is still plenty of building work going on, but those taking a tour today will see a much more completed site than when the tours originally started.
If you want to smell the air and the anticipation you can also take a walking tour around the site, although obviously not right up to the buildings for ye olde health and safety reasons. One would suspect that Olympic visitors squashed by giant lump of concrete might not be exactly the PR the Olympic committee wants. :)
However, if you don’t want to wait ages for a ticket, why not just wander by on the new Greenwich 6 mile footpath which runs passed the site. There’s no big blocking fences in the way, so you can freely meander by and see what the stadiums and Olympic village where the athletes will be staying is likely to look like in a few months time. There’s also a cafe en-route with good views of the site.
Whatever you want to do, why not pop down to see what might be the first big construction project in this country which actually comes in on budget….eat your heart out Wembley!
