Most people seem to think Cumbria is the Lake District, but even if you’re visiting the lakes we recommend taking a little time out to visit some of the nearby areas which are much less touristy.
One such area is the Eden Valley which is an area of North Cumbria roughly sided between Shap Fell to the south, Keswick to the west and Carlisle in the north.
I mention this partly because I’ve lived there for 30 odd years, and partly because the Telegraph has published a good National Trust walk around the area, which is really easy to get to from both the M6 motorway at J40 and A66 cross-Pennine route just before you get to Penrith.
The walk takes place around the Temple Sowerby area, focusing partly on the Acorn Bank National Trust property. Originally known as Temple Sowerby Hall, the property has extensive gardens which at this time of year are one of the best places to see wild daffodils in the country.
Surrounding Acorn Bank are plenty of wooded, open countryside and farmlands but without the massive crowds and of course caravans, making the area a much more pleasant place to meander. Within the walk route you’ll also get to see the Settle To Carlisle Railway, which is often described as one of the most scenic in the country.
Even if you’re visiting the Lake District, why not take a day out and explore the areas which are slightly less well known but equally as beautiful.
