Started in 2008, The Great Swim 2011 will take place around 5 venues across Britain with 1000s of people diving into lakes and lochs around the country, many in aid of charities.
Known this year as the British Gas Great Swim, the event gives leisure swimmers the chance to swim alongside the professionals in a safe environment, albeit possibly not very warm locations including lochs, docks and lakes.
Over 20,000 people took part in 2010 and this year even more are expected. Each location is split into several events, from 1/2 mile, one mile and two mile courses depending on your ability, and with this being a freshwater environment, there’s no chlorine to worry about as you’d get in the local leisure pool.
There’s no clock to worry about, it’s really just about getting round the course and having fun, and for many raising as much money as possible in the process.
The swim’s this year are taking place at:
- Great Salford Swim – Salford Quays on 15th May
- Great East Swim – Alton Water Park, Ipswich on 11th June
- Great North Swim – Independent Place in Windermere on 18th and 19th June
- Great London Swim – Royal Victoria Dock 2nd July
- Great Scottish Swim – Strathclyde (date TBA)
