Another runway at Heathrow

Yesterday’s confirmation by Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon that there will be a third runway and sixth terminal at Heathrow has been met with a mixed response. Whilst some are arguing that it will make for a better experience for incoming tourists (who to date have often voted Heathrow as their least favourite airport), others are objecting on environmental grounds.  What’s your take on it all?

Why expand Heathrow? It’s a nightmare trying to get anywhere from there esp by car, and it’s way too big internally which is odd considering the lack of any real shops. Go build another one or expand Manchester would be a better idea.

I’m also wondering – why are the airlines wanting a new runway when most of them are going bust? Doesn’t really seem to addup.

Just like more roads/motorways seem to generate more cars/traffic, I think more runways tend to generate more air travel, Trev, so I suspect that’s why the airlines are all in favour.

Wouldn’t surprise me if this didn’t happen anyway. It’ll take years of planning and so forth, by which time the Tories will be in power (they opposed it) and Gatwick and Stanstead will have been sold off in the name of competition. As such it would seem logical to allow one of those an extra runway rather than give it to Heathrow.
