This week BBC2 viewers saw Julia Bradbury enjoying a railway walk along the beautiful Mawddach Estuary from Dolgellau to Barmouth in North Wales. This spectacular part of Snowdonia, between Cardigan Bay’s golden beaches and the rugged mountains of the Rhinogs and Cadair Idris, is peaceful and uncrowded, and is explored by walking specialist Upland Escapes.
An independent Upland Escapes walking holiday in North Wales offers a wide range of self-guided walks to suit all fitness levels and ages, including children. There are short strolls to waterfalls and lakes, beaches and castles, and into the hills with stunning views across the Mawddach estuary. Half day walks offer valley landscapes, high grassy slopes with wonderful sea views, and a crossing of the impressive 900 metre Barmouth Bridge to follow the line of the Railway Walk along the estuary banks. Full day walks also explore the Mawddach Estuary and the beautiful lakes to be found nearby, as well as the slopes of Cadair Idris (Snowdonia’s 2nd most popular peak).
The old railway line is also ideally suited to cyclists, and Upland Escapes outlines a wonderful cycle circuit crossing Barmouth Bridge and tracing the railway to Dolgellau before circling inland past the stunning Cregennan Lakes and descending back to Barmouth. Organised walks led by a knowledgeable local guide are also available.

Thoroughly agree with this recommendation, having completed the walks mentioned on a number of occasions. Note that there is often a toll for pedestrians crossing the bridge, so take some money.
