2 million use IRIS system in UK airports

According to the latest Home Office figures a huge 2 million visitors to the UK have been tracked by the new Iris Recognition Immigration System (IRIS).  The system is in place at Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester and Birmingham Airports and increases security whilst speeding up the process at immigration controls.  300,000 people are now registered to use special IRIS gates and when they arrive back in the UK they can avoid the queues. The gates were introduced in 2006 and the Border and Immigration Minister comments “IRIS combines security with quicker times at immigration controls helping to avoid queues when arriving back in the UK.  The IRIS system is a prime example of how the UK’s strong new Border Force is using the latest technology to speed up travel for legitimate passengers while making it more difficult for criminals and illegal immigrants to get into the country.”  IRIS records iris patterns and checking details against immigration, police and security watch lists.
