The Crooked House of Windsor

When thing that strikes the visitor to many old towns and cities such as Windsor and York is the slight uneven angles of some of the buildings – possibly due to no one having invented the spirit level. However one house in Windsor takes this to a greater extreme with a ground floor that quite literally leans, at a rather alarming angle.

The Crooked House of Windsor or Market Street House as it’s formerly known was originally built around 1592 and was fairly straight by all accounts. However builders tried to modify the house around 1718 using unseasoned oak which then dried over the years and bent the entire structure.

Since the house has stood in this condition for over 280 years it is presumably perfectly safe, and has now been turned into a small cafe.

The crooked house can be found just off high street close to the town centre castle.
