A new application to be used on iPhones and similar is causing a bit of a stir in the way it describes some countries.
The app called “What country“* is essentially meant as a light hearted look at various countries, in a very vague travel guide style. It describes us Brits under the heading “tea, weird sense of humour and rain“, which actually I don’t think is too bad, although I’m sure a recent survey suggested we drink more coffee than tea.
According to an American friend who has travelled extensively, us Brits do apparently have a slightly odd sense of humour mostly because we can call our friends all kinds of names and no one gets offended. This apparently baffles a lot of people from the US, so I’m told.
The iTunes app actually came to our attention after it described Italy rather less flatteringly as “pizza, the Mafia and scooters” – the middle one being the bit that offended Italy’s tourism minister and who made the classic mistake of giving it more publicity than the makers could have dreamed of.
* Before anyone points it out, I know that’s grammatically incorrect but that’s what they called it, not me.
