A new exhibition has opened at the Bristol City Museum celebrating the 100th anniversary of the first flight of the Bristol Boxkite in 1910.
The Bristol Boxkite might not be a household name today, but in the early days of British aviation it was one of the leading aeroplanes, even though to look at it now one has to wonder how such an aircraft ever took off.
The plane was created by the Bristol Aeroplane Company which had important parts to play in a number of other more famous aviation companies including British Aerospace, Rolls-Royce (Bristol) and Airbus (Filton) which now produces the wings for the massive Airbus A380.
The exhibition looks at the history Bristol’s links with aviation in the West of England especially around Bristol, with exhibitions from the early planes such as the Bristol Boxkite right through to the more modern airline connections.
