Anyone in central London tomorrow might get a slight surprise when around 400 cyclists ride through, all dressed in tweed.
This isn’t a strange promotion for the Boris Bike, but will be the 3rd Tweed Run which takes a 10 mile leisurely route via St Paul’s, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, Savile Row to name just a few.
The run is open to men and ladies naturally and participants can ride essentially any kind of bike, both modern and antique although racing style “safety bikes” are encouraged. A few brave soles however have managed the route on a penny farthing.
All participants dress in tweed which considering tomorrow’s expected heat in London is going to be an interesting and rather itchy experience.
Why do they do this? According to the official Tweed Run web site it is raising money for Bikes4Africa which is a charity run by Rotary International of Britain and Ireland.
Entrants must be registered and all places are currently booked for this year, but you can still watch the run all along the route.
The route is listed here on Google Maps and you can see photos of a previous Tweed Run on the Ian Visits blog.
Update: There are pics of the 600 strong tweed run (2011) cyclists on the Londist blog with more details on how the event went.
