They must be some of the biggest and most recognisable carvings in the world, and now 10 of the Moai stones from Easter Island are in Middlesbrough for the first time.
The stones which are up to 10 feet high, all depict figures with out of proportion heads, kneeling while cradling their stomachs. They were first documented by Captain Cook in 1774, so it’s rather fitting that the only stones outside the British Museum (which has 2) should be displaying at The Captain Cook Museum in Middlesborough.
Part of an international exhibition, the stones will be on display until September this year, after which they are going on display back at Easter Island from May 2012.
The Captain Cook Museum in Middlesborough is open Tuesday to Sunday and admission is free.
