RISE – A new attraction in Belfast takes shape

A new and at times controversial sculpture to rival the Angel of the North will start to take place in Belfast this week after years of delays.

The sculpture is called RISE and will consist in essence of two huge silver and white globes, measuring around 123-metres high and placed at the meeting of two of the busiest roads in Belfast.

Artist Wolfgang Buttress is hoping this will become a new public art work that gets both residents and those visiting the city with a new focal point and free attraction. The sculpture is intended to show the area having a new beginning with the rising of the sun over a healing Belfast.

The positioning of the sculptures on a roundabout might reduce the numbers actually getting up close with them, unlike the Angel of the North which attracts thousands of visitors to its base every year.

Originally conceived in 2007, the sculpture project is estimated to cost around £400,000 which made it very controversial especially with the financial problems experienced across Europe, but councillors decided to go ahead as it was an important art work and talking point for the city.

In a few months time, if you’re driving in or even better flying into Belfast via George Best Airport, you’ll have something new to gaze at.
